Andrew Glover of the Morristown Police Department shows Nate, a 5th grader from Johnson, the new prescription drop box.

Wednesday, August 10th was an exciting day in our region for those who have been following the opiate discussion.  Our region now has two permanent, year round prescription drug drop boxes!

Andrew Glover of the Morristown Police Department began working on this project in April after speaking with Christopher Paquette, the Diversion Investigator for DEA in Burlington, Vermont, about the Drug Take Back Initiative. He shares, “Lamoille County Law Enforcement Agencies recognize the need to get unused prescriptions out of the home and disposed of properly before they can be misused, stolen, or accidentally ingested.  Americans are now advised that their usual methods for disposing of unused medicines—flushing them down the toilet or throwing them in the trash—both pose potential safety and health hazards. These drug boxes create a safe and anonymous way to dispose pills in the Lamoille Valley.”

The boxes are located in the lobby at the Morristown Police Department and by the main entrance at the Lamoille County Sheriff’s Department.  These boxes cannot accept liquids or needles or sharps, only pills or patches. Please remove medicine bottles from bags and confirm that your medicines drop down to the bottom of the box before leaving.  For more information on Sharps disposal in Vermont visit: http://healthvermont.gov/adap/documents/sharps_disposal_flyer.pdf
