When your town participates in Green Up Day on May 2nd, you can do more than just pick up trash – you can also help us understand the environmental impact of tobacco, alcohol, cannabis, and other substances in our public spaces. Whether you’re part of an organization or participating as an individual, your efforts help us see where substance-related litter shows up and how it affects our communities.

As you clean up, you’re invited to:

  • Complete our environmental survey to document where you see tobacco, alcohol, cannabis, and other substance-related litter.
  • Pay special attention to cigarette butts, the world’s #1 littered item, which contain toxic chemicals and plastic filters that break down into harmful microplastics, polluting soil and water and harming wildlife.
  • Consider how this one day of service can launch a year-round effort to reduce tobacco-related litter in your community.

You can take the next step by planning a Cigarette Butt Litter Cleanup at your school, workplace, neighborhood, or any high-traffic area where butts tend to collect. This can be part of your Green Up Day efforts or a follow-up event later in the year. Every cleanup helps keep our environment healthier and raises awareness about tobacco waste.

Healthy Lamoille Valley can support you with gloves, bags, litter grabbers, and counters, as well as tools to help you track what you’re finding.

Learn more about the environmental survey, year-round involvement, and how we can support a cigarette butt cleanup in your community on our year-round clean-up page!
