Warm wishes from Healthy Lamoille Valley for healthy and safe winter celebrations and a Happy New Year!

As we gather with family, friends, and community, it’s a good time to keep kids and teens safe by securing adult-use substances in your home and at gatherings. Safe storage of medications and substances is particularly important for anyone with young children or pets in the home. When alcoholic drinks are available, keep them secure and separate from non-alcoholic drinks and monitor access. Cannabis is harmful for kids, teens, and pets – be sure to keep your stash stored in a locked bag or box. Learn more about cannabis safety and health risks for children and youth at the VT Dept of Health website.

December is National Impaired Driving Awareness Month
Alcohol and cannabis can impact your ability to drive. If you’re not able to drive, have a designated driver who can take over. Some medications can slow reaction time or cause drowsiness, they can also interact with alcohol. Check with your doctor or pharmacist for information about your prescriptions. Tiredness and stress can distract you while driving. This is also is a reason to have someone to take over driving. Impaired driving is entirely preventable. Know the facts, and talk with your kids about the dangers of driving under the influence of alcohol or other drugs.
